Charlie Kirk Assassinated, HBCUs Threatened: What Do Black-Led Schools Have to Do With This?

The assassination of right-wing figure Charlie Kirk has left the U.S. reeling — not only because of his high-profile position in conservative politics, but also because of what’s happening in the aftermath. While officials scramble to investigate his killing, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are reporting a disturbing wave of violent threats.

And that raises a serious question: what do Black-led schools — institutions built to uplift, empower, and educate African Americans — have to do with the death of a white conservative commentator?

The answer, on the surface, should be nothing. But history shows us that in America, whenever political tensions explode, the backlash too often lands at Black people’s doorsteps.

The Dangerous Targeting of HBCUs

This isn’t the first time HBCUs have been threatened. From bomb threats in 2022 to ongoing harassment campaigns, Black educational institutions have always had a target on their backs simply for existing. They are symbols of Black excellence, resistance, and self-determination — and in a society that thrives on anti-Blackness, those symbols are constantly under attack.

Now, in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, extremists are linking their rage to Black-led spaces. Why? Because to them, Black progress is always the enemy.

A Pattern of Scapegoating

We’ve seen this script before. When white America feels shaken — whether from social unrest, political violence, or cultural change — the knee-jerk reaction is to point fingers at Black communities. It’s a tactic as old as Jim Crow: deflect blame and redirect anger toward the people who already carry the heaviest burden.

The threats to HBCUs aren’t random. They’re part of a broader strategy to intimidate, silence, and destabilize Black spaces at a time when this country desperately needs them to thrive.

What Needs to Be Asked

So, let’s put the question directly: Why should students trying to earn degrees in safe, nurturing environments suddenly have to live under the shadow of death threats tied to the assassination of a man who built his career targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion?

Why should Black scholars, educators, and institutions be dragged into a conflict they had no part in creating?

And most importantly — when will America stop treating Black life as collateral damage in its endless culture wars?

The Bottom Line

HBCUs don’t owe America an explanation. America owes HBCUs protection. If this country truly values freedom, safety, and education, then the threats against these institutions need to be investigated with the same urgency and seriousness as the assassination itself.

Because at the end of the day, Black students deserve more than “thoughts and prayers.” They deserve classrooms free from fear. They deserve institutions that can focus on building the future, not dodging the past’s recycled violence.

The real question isn’t what HBCUs have to do with Charlie Kirk’s assassination. It’s why they’re always forced to carry the consequences of a country that can’t confront its own demons.
