Toronto, ON — Black tenants living under Pinedale Properties on 9-27 Bergamot Avenue in Etobicoke say they’re trapped in a nightmare—forced to live in rundown units with flooding, mold, broken plumbing and appliances. But the most outrageous part? Tenants report they’re being billed for the very repairs they begged to have fixed—including busted appliances they didn’t break.
“The fridge stopped working. Then the stove went. And instead of sending someone to fix it, they sent me an invoice,” said Claudine, a tenant and single mother of two. “They said it was my fault. I’ve never even touched the back of the stove!”
Tenants say stoves, fridges, and dishwashers have sat broken for weeks—sometimes months. Instead of fulfilling their responsibility to maintain the units, Pinedale allegedly tries to push the cost of repairs onto tenants, claiming “misuse” without proof.
“It’s not even just the plumbing or the flooding anymore,” said one resident. “Now they’re saying if your oven breaks or your fridge dies, you have to fix it. What are we paying rent for?”
Speak Out, Get Pushed Out
Residents also say that when they speak up—whether to the city, the press, or just posting videos on social media—they face retaliation. Eviction notices. Harassment. Surprise inspections. Unauthorized entries.
A Racial Housing Crisis
Housing advocates say what’s happening on Bergamot Drive isn’t an isolated case—it’s part of a systemic pattern of anti-Black housing discrimination in Toronto.
The formula is simple: neglect the building, blame the tenant, and cash in once they’re forced out.
