Amang Goes to the Village is a Model Children’s Story

Amang, a goat whose adventures are classical animal idioms that express human experiences where a choice must be made between options, freedom, and subjugation.

Due out May 27, Namse Udosen’s newest book is in the league of classic children’s stories. But this is common to followers of the author’s literary preoccupations and educational commitments. Namse Udosen had rooted himself in exceptional writing accomplishments in children’s literature through his past writing credits. The author of Silly Sally and Fundamental Etiquette for Young Nigerians, Udosen is gradually carving a place of remarkable stature in the writing world through his new book, Amang Goes to the Village.

Amang is a goat caught between two worlds: the wild and free and the disciplined life on an animal farm. But he must find his joys and choose where to fly on the wings of freedom and live like a happy goat. Amang’s predicament is a perfect backdrop for the story’s progression, twists, and turns. But what inspired this adventurous animal character?

“Amang’s story was born when I took my pupils to the school farm at Essence International School,” the author says. He adds, “We saw goats and sheep behind the wires of the school pen. We watched as the farm manager fed the animals. Every time I passed by, I would say hi to the animals. And then my imagination started running wild. The first draft was told orally to children in the classroom.”

A writer with a propensity for encouraging his imagination, Namse Udosen says, “The book is a series. More adventures of Amang in Kagoro and elsewhere are on the way.”

This delightfully illustrated book is a gift to children worldwide and a perfect tribute to them on the global celebration of Children’s Day. The producers could not have chosen a better day to tell readers and children about the adventures of Amang, a goat whose adventures are classical animal idioms that express human experiences where a choice must be made between options, freedom, and subjugation.

Eager to continue writing for children, Namse Udosen hints, “I am working on a collaboration with Nahida Esmail, a Tanzanian children’s storybook author, to publish our story, Ekpu the Brave Rat. I also have some other manuscripts to be retouched.”

Amang Goes to the Village is illustrated by international cartoonist, Abdukareem Baba-Aminu and will be available at Roving Heights, Spine, Label, Oiuda, and elsewhere where good books are sold.
