OPA! Experiencing the Heart and Soul of Greece at Folklorama

If you ever wonder what it’s like to be right in the middle of a traditional Greek wedding, stepping into the Greek pavilion felt like walking straight into a celebratory family feast on the Mediterranean. The only thing missing was the sound of plates smashing on the floor—though given the vibrant, welcoming energy of the hosts, they probably would have happily obliged! Instead, it was an immersive celebration filled with rich culture, world-class entertainment, and a master storyteller on stage who wove the entire experience together.

The pavilion beautifully brought timeless customs to life. Guests could admire the traditional ganokoulora bread, thoughtfully baked by unmarried women, while Ellie Chouzouris shone as an ambassador extraordinaire. Giving just another masterclass in hospitality, Ellie provided visitors with the full rundown on Greek culture, and of course, like any great ambassador, she was right up there performing in the show. The showcase walked audiences through the intimate rituals of a Greek wedding: the bridesmaids and family meticulously preparing the marriage bed—covering it with rice, almonds, and money to bless the couple with prosperity and sweetness, and the crowning ceremony, symbolizing the creation of a new kingdom and a royal partnership built together.

Adding a personal and artistic touch to the experience, Agapi Ortaxidou and Christine Tambakis, a true staple at the pavilion, delighted visitors by teaching Greek words and writing their names on bookmarks in Greek lettering. What an amazing commemorative souvenir to take away, and best of all, it is free. Guest service was hospitality at its finest, led by the warm welcome of Natacha, while pavilion coordinator Athina ensured every detail shone. Athina deserves a special nod for her dedication over the years, curating a show of the highest calibre anchored by the masterful art of storytelling.

Of course, no Greek pavilion would be complete without the sensory explosion of authentic food and dancing. The air was filled with the mouth-watering aroma of souvlaki, incredible live singing, and a crowd that couldn’t resist joining in on the audience participation. Naturally, the grand finale brought everyone together for the legendary Zorba dance, leaving the room buzzing with electricity and making you want to immediately hop on a plane and head straight to Greece.

Above all, this year’s pavilion held a deeply moving milestone that deserves the highest recognition. Kathleen Tambakis recently celebrated her 86th birthday alongside an incredible 50 years plus of dedicated volunteering with Folklorama. She represents the beating heart and bedrock of this community, pouring decades of love, culture, and tireless devotion into making every visitor feel like family.

Moments like these remind us why community festivals are so vital to our cultural fabric. They bridge generations, celebrate our neighbours, and offer a powerful reminder of how shared traditions can unite an entire city under one roof. The warmth and generosity radiating from every corner of the Greek pavilion leave an imprint on your heart long after the music fades.
