BRANDON, MANITOBA — A 15-year-old Black student, Chinoso Oduke, is recovering from serious injuries after a horrifying and racially motivated sword attack at Kneelin High School earlier this week. The attacker, a 16-year-old student from the same school, is now in police custody and facing multiple charges, including attempted murder.

According to police, the assault happened during a mid-morning transition period at the school.

The accused allegedly approached Oduke with a katana-style sword, shouted racial slurs, and began swinging the weapon with clear intent to kill. Witnesses say the hallway erupted in chaos as students screamed and ran for safety.

Chinoso, known to friends and teachers as soft-spoken, intelligent, and full of promise, sustained deep lacerations and blunt force trauma. He was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery and remains in stable condition.

His family, still in shock, says Chinoso is “mentally shattered” by the attack and is asking for privacy while he begins a long physical and emotional recovery.

“This was an act of racial terror,” said Ngozi Oduke, Chinoso’s mother. “My son was attacked for being Black. This didn’t come out of nowhere—there were warning signs.”

Red Flags Were There—and Ignored

Students and community members are now placing blame squarely on the school and school board, accusing them of ignoring the attacker’s disturbing behavior for months.

“He was obsessed with violence,” said one classmate who witnessed the attack. “He’d make jokes about killing people, shared racist memes, and said Black people ‘don’t belong here.’ We told the school. They did nothing.”

Teachers reportedly flagged the student’s behavior to administrators on multiple occasions. Still, no disciplinary action was taken. Some even allege the student was allowed to return to class the same day he was caught drawing swastikas in a notebook.

“This is not negligence—this is complicity,” said Fatima Clarke, a community organizer with the Manitoba Anti-Racism Collective. “How many Black children have to be hurt before someone takes racism in our schools seriously?”

Arrest and Charges

The 16-year-old attacker, whose name is being withheld under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was arrested on-site by RCMP officers. Police confirmed he has been charged with:

  • Attempted Murder
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Committing an Indictable Offence for the Benefit of a Hate Group

RCMP investigators say they found white supremacist materials in the suspect’s home, including a journal detailing plans to carry out the attack. His social media accounts were reportedly filled with hateful content targeting Black people and immigrants.

“This was not a fight. This was not a random act of school violence,” said RCMP Sergeant Danielle Michaud. “This was a hate-fueled, premeditated assault on a child because of the color of his skin.”
